Zero-Drop

What Is Zero-Drop Barefoot Footwear?

If you’re new to zero-drop shoes, you’ve probably heard the term but may not fully understand its meaning.

Zero-drop refers to the heel-to-toe angle in a shoe. Most traditional footwear features an elevated heel—ranging from 14-24mm (0.5″-1.0″)—which disrupts spinal alignment and encourages an unnatural heel strike.

In contrast, zero-drop shoes keep your heel and toes at the same level, replicating your natural barefoot stance on a flat surface.

Why Wear Zero-Drop Shoes?

Zero-drop footwear offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Better ankle mobility
  • A more natural running and walking gait
  • Improved posture and spinal alignment
  • Enhanced balance and stability
  • Reduced strain on joints and lower back

Many people find that persistent foot, knee, or back pain diminishes after switching to zero-drop shoes. By keeping the foot level with the ground, posture is corrected naturally, and a midfoot strike is encouraged—reducing impact and promoting healthier movement.

Transitioning to Zero-Drop Shoes

Switching from traditional footwear to zero-drop shoes takes time. Your muscles, tendons, and ligaments may be weak from years of wearing conventional shoes, so it’s important to ease into the transition gradually. Strengthening your feet will help make the adjustment smoother.
